THE band wagon carrying the world famous ABBA Gold tribute band is thundering towards Tavistock to help farmers hit by the West Devon foot and mouth epidemic.

Lydford window cleaner and impresario Fred Still decided to do something positive and fun to help out local farmers hit for six by the crisis. He has diverted the band from its triumphant tour of South Africa, Moscow, Budapest and Beirut for a gig in Tavistock.

'I know for a fact that day by day money is becoming very hard to come by for farmers,' said Fred. 'I'm surrounded by farmers where I live and they are suffering. I can see that first hand. I wanted them to know we are doing something for them, and that the money raised will be available locally.

'Putting on this concert might help. It is better to try and help than do nothing. I also wanted to put a smile on people's faces. ABBA Gold will appeal to all ages.'

l The show will take place at the town hall on May 26 at 8pm. Tickets cost £10, available from Book Stop 01822 617244, but two tickets are available free for one lucky person who can name all four members of the original ABBA.

Answers on a postcard with name and daytime telephone number to Dave Hatwell of Dartmoor Interiors in Tavistock, who has donated the tickets. The draw will take place on May 23.
