CLLR Christine Marsh has been elected as mayor of Okehampton for the fourth year running.

The two-horse race between Cllr Marsh and Cllr Stan Stormont at the annual town meeting on Monday resulted in a 10-3 vote in the former's favour, after additional nominated councillors Perry Vallance and Frances Luxton declined to stand.

Cllr Marsh, who is also a Devon County Councillor, said she was very pleased to follow through the hard work that had been achieved over the past three years.

'I am proud and privileged to be mayor of Okehampton and have the support of the council,' she said.

'It's nice to know they feel I am doing a good job.'

This year will see the council's first ever performance plan spring into action — the mayor said she was glad to be at the helm as the council and town entered a new phase.

'Our performance plan is very important as its sets our goals for the next five years,' she said. 'Okehampton is definitely on the up and we have managed to achieve a unity with people working together and taking an interest in their town.'
