BERNIE and Brenda Steed ask (Letters, June 7) how we can help Dartmoor businesses. They themselves did just what is needed — had lunch at a Dartmoor pub. It is the actions of people like them that will make all the difference.
Despite the welcome phased opening up of Dartmoor, which will bring some relief to visitor-dependent businesses, the hard realisation is that the main holiday season will be over in a matter of weeks. Moorland businesses will need focused support for many months.
The unique crisis of foot and mouth requires each of us to think and act differently. A small change in our behaviour patterns could mean survival rather than bankruptcy for many businesses.
We therefore appeal to everyone to consider the following actions:
l refuel your car at a Dartmoor garage
l do some regular shopping at a Dartmoor village store/post office
l enjoy a lunchtime or evening meal at a Dartmoor hostelry at least once a month
l treat yourself to a short break at a Dartmoor B&B or hotel.
