AN urgent call has gone out for people who can spare a small amount of their time to volunteer at one of West Devon's unique heritage sites. The National Trust describes Finch Foundry, in Sticklepath, as 'an unparalleled example of Devon's industrial past'. It is the last remaining water-powered forge in the country and now needs a team of enthusiastic volunteers as the summer fast approaches. A spokesman for the National Trust said: 'Set amidst beautiful countryside, the foundry and its gardens surprise many visitors who thought industrial heritage was simply dirty and boring. 'By becoming a member of the small enthusiastic team at the foundry, a volunteer could become part of this fascinating world. 'This really is an opportunity to join and meet with friendly, like-minded people who have a passion for local history and heritage. 'Those interested in volunteering are invited to come along and discuss the benefits of volunteering at Finch and have a good look around.' Roger Boney, custodian at the foundry, added: 'All our volunteers become totally devoted to the property, it's that sort of place. 'However, some, who have been with us many years, now regretfully think its time to call it a day. 'It is these people that we must now seek to replace. Without the generosity of our volunteers, Finch Foundry could not function and Devon would be a poorer place for that.' The National Trust will provide full training and support while giving volunteers the chance to learn new skills as well as practising existing ones. Prospective volunteers should be outgoing, physically fit and interested in volunteering in the Finch Foundry shop or visitor reception. Anyone interested should call 01837 840046 for further details.
