THE health of Tavistock as a shopping hub, was the topic of an open forum hosted recently by Lamerton WI.

The panel consisted of representatives from Devon County Council, West Devon Borough Council, BID, Chamber of Commerce, Totally Locally, and retailers.

They answered questions from more than 80 members of the public and reviewed suggestions for improvement and innovation. The key issues raised related to rent and rates, charity shops, parking, tourism and the need for a co-ordinated approach for future strategies.

Firstly, it was suggested that reduced business rates in the short-term would support new and struggling businesses. There was particular concern about charity shops.

Parking is an on-going issue — suggestions included the first hour free, a tear off rebate slip that can be redeemed at local shops, or an automatic car park barrier at Bedford Car Park to enable payment on exit, which would allow a more relaxed visit to the town.

A map of the town and shops should be located in a prominent central position.

It was also felt that it was essential to build on the World Heritage status.

A key engine for change could be a web-based Tavistock portal, which could encompass all the shops, services, businesses and tourist information, as well as the various councils' provisions.

Under this there could be categories to enable locals and visitors to find out opening hours and product availability.

All local business would then have an on-line profile which could enable internet shopping using local stores and perhaps include a virtual walk through the town.

There could also be an opportunity to provide a multi-shop free delivery service in the local area.
