A FIFTY-EIGHT-year-old retired teacher from Yelverton is due to appear at a magistrates' court in Wiltshire today (Thursday) to face 36 child sex abuse charges.

Former science teacher Peter Hamilton-Leggett made a brief appearance at Trowbridge Magistrates' Court last Thursday.

He has been charged in relation to offences alleged to have occurred from the mid-1970s to mid-1980s, while he was teaching at two private all-boys' boarding schools — the Old Ride Preparatory School in Bradford-on-Avon and the Lambrook School in Bracknell, Berkshire.

He also taught at Tavistock's Mount House School and Wiltshire Police have now appealed for former pupils or members of staff who attended the school between September 1985 and June 2001 to contact them if they have any information which could be relevant to the investigation.

Mr Hamilton-Leggett was arrested at his home in Yelverton on Monday, September 9, and was transferred to Melksham police station in Wiltshire the next day, where he was interviewed and charged with 32 offences.

After appearing in court last Thursday, he was taken to Melksham police station for questioning relating to further allegations of abuse. He was released on conditional bail to return to Trowbridge Magistrates' Court today where he will face all 36 charges.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Mount House School said: 'We have been informed that Mr Hamilton-Leggett, an employee of the school from 1986 to December 2001, is the subject of an ongoing police investigation.

'We understand that to date there have been no allegations made relating to his period of employment at Mount House School.

'We have no further information at this stage and, if asked, will co-operate fully with any police enquiry.'

Pupils who attended Mount House School between September 1985 and June 2001, are asked to contact DS Dave Martin, if they have any information relevant to the inquiry, on 01225 763101 ext 591.
