A FORMER naval officer from Plymouth has been chosen as the prospective parliamentary Labour candidate for South East Cornwall. Colin Binley has extensive experience in local government and, among other charitable activities, serves as a war pensions tribunal advisor and works with disability bodies. He started his working life in engineering, went to Ruskin College, Oxford, then joined the navy, where he remained until injury forced his premature retirement. Married to Heather, with three grown-up children and five grandchildren, Mr Binley says he puts the interests of the family at the heart of his concerns. He told party members in Liskeard he was proud of Labour?s ?family-friendly policies?. He said: ?Family tax credits have lifted families out of poverty. ?We must provide affordable houses for families and ensure they receive excellent education and first-class health care in a secure and clean environment.? A ?great deal? of money had gone into rural transport to combat isolation, he said. ?Unemployemt in Cornwall is at its lowest ever level. We have good reason to be proud of our achievements. We need another term to finish the job.?
