A FORMER headmaster of St Rumon's School in Tavistock has died this week at the age of 82.
Peter Yates served in the Merchant Navy throughout the Second World War, before entering the teaching profession in peace time.
He moved to Tavistock and taught at Hennock School for some years, moved to become headmaster at St Rumon's School and finally taught at Bere Alston, after which he took early retirement in his early sixties.
Since retiring, Mr Yates had played a prominent part in Tavistock life.
He was an active member of Tavistock Golf Club for many years, chairman of the Tavistock Bridge Club and member of Tavistock Probus.
He was also a keen member of the Ramblers' Association.
He leaves a widow, two step-children and four step-grandchildren.
