A FORMER police officer from Tavistock is set to start a new role with Parkinson's UK as a volunteer speaker and ambassador.

Mark Hoar, 52, was diagnosed with Parkinson's 12 years ago but this has not stopped him from taking part in a number of events to raise vital funds for Parkinson's UK.

Mark said: 'I wanted to make a real difference to people who are living with Parkinson's so I decided to raise funds by abseiling down Derriford Hospital in Plymouth and I also organised two charity golf days.

'A few months ago I found out that Parkinson's UK was looking for volunteer speakers. The opportunity was too good to turn down and now that I am retired, I contacted them to say I was interested in helping to raise awareness of the condition.

'I am looking forward to hearing from any local groups that are interested in knowing more about how Parkinson's UK helps and supports people with this life changing condition. It is not just the patient, families and carers all need support as well. Every hour someone in the UK is told that they have Parkinson's.

'Parkinson's UK ensures that no-one has to face Parkinson's alone and I want to be part of spreading that message.'

Mark attended a training day with the charity in Bristol recently and is now ready to demonstrate his public speaking skills.

Zoe Steer, regional fundraiser in the South West for Parkinson's UK, said: 'I am delighted that Mark is joining the charity as a volunteer speaker and ambassador.

'I'd like to thank Mark for his continuing commitment to fundraising and raising awareness of the work of Parkinson's UK.

'Volunteer speakers play a vital role as they take the charity's messages out into the local community and help to bring a better understanding of Parkinson's.'

Local community groups and organisations who would like Mark to give a presentation on Parkinson's, and the work of Parkinson's UK, can contact him on 01822 618498 or email [email protected]">[email protected]. uk
