A MAJOR initiative aimed at boosting tourist attractions in West Devon and East Cornwall is to be launched this summer, focussing on outlets which have demonstrated an environmentally-friendly approach to the industry. Restaurants, pubs, local businesses, arts venues and community projects which have demonstrated a high level of commitment to a sustainable, cultural and environmentally-friendly ethos will be rewarded with a new industry standard for the area, The Footprint. The new standard has been developed by the Tavistock and Villages Initiative group (TAVI), in conjunction with local residents, business people and tourist industry representatives. TAVI says it has been increasingly recognised that tourism needs to be sustainable in order to preserve the distinctive heritage and natural beauty of the area and to promote local artists, businesses, products and attractions, boosting employment and enhancing local undustry. Andrew Young of TAVI said: ?The Footprint will define a brand of tourism that aims to conserve the natural environment, whilst promoting the rural economy. ?By having a brand, it will be easier to express what local people want from tourism. Every visitor dreams of finding a place unspoilt by tourism ? and we want to make our bit of Britain that place.? TAVI hopes The Footprint will developed into a recognised accreditation scheme, directing visitors towards establishments which uphold its values and are committed to local produce, alternative energy and transport and innovative ways of presenting heritage, education and the arts in the West Devon and East Cornwall area. The group is applying for funding to carry out a research project into visitor numbers, activities and interest in the area ? it is hoped to build a sustainable information centre, possibly at Yelverton, in the future. The Footprint is being launched at the beginning of July with a stone-carrying project. Stone-carrying is an ancient practice whereby indigenous cultures believed a stone could hold the memory of the people or land through which it has passed and from which it originated. A piece of Merrivale granite stone, chosen from hundreds using an ancient dousing method, will be carried using low impact transport such as canoe, horse, bicyle and walking as well as buses and trains. The stone will stop en route at arts venues, attractions, community centres and public places, where performances and exhibitions promoting The Footprints values and intentions will take place. Stone carrier Caroline Keane, of Tavistock, said: ?To encourage people to walk lightly on our earth and to take responsibility for our imprint being environmentally-friendly is the primary aim of The Footprint. ?We are bringing different sectors related to tourism together to enhance our appeal to visitors, while ensuring the least impact is being made on our beautiful surroundings.? Any tourist business in the West Devon and East Cornwall area interested in finding out more about The Footprint can call Caroline Keane on 01822 610546.
