FIDDLE and viola players from across the South West will join together in Okehampton for a day of music-making with expert tutors later this month. The Wren Music Fiddle Day on Saturday, June 28 is a chance for experienced players and complete beginners to develop their playing and their knowledge of the instrument. The day focuses on learning new skills and techniques as well as repertoire development, on both violin and viola. This year's tutors are fiddle and viola player Miranda Rutter from the Methera Quartet, and Becki Driscoll. Miranda's workshop will look at good posture, playing with pulse, tone development, and bowing techniques. The beginner's workshop with Becki will focus on basic technique and learning simple tunes. There will be something for everyone to play. Instruments can be loaned to complete beginners, but these need to be booked in advance from Wren Music. The duo will be joined in the afternoon by concertina maestro Rob Harbron of the English Acoustic Collective and Nick Wyke on guitar and fiddle, when the day is opened to other acoustic instrument players to create a massed folk orchestra. In the evening, the tutors will give a concert at Fairplace Church. This concert will feature the two duos of Rob and Miranda and Nick and Becki playing a mix of English and European traditional music, along with new compositions and rousing songs both old and new. This annual event, now in its sixth year, has brought internationally recognised fiddle players and tutors to the heart of Devon. Event organiser Becki Driscoll of Wren Music said: 'This day really has something for everyone. Even if you've never played before, you can come along and try it out. You don't need to be able to read music, but we will provide sheet music. And the best bit is you get to spend all day playing the fiddle.'
