PEOPLE are being asked to have their say on a set of guidelines which support existing policies and will help West Devon Borough Council to make future planning decisions about wind turbines and solar farms.

Such applications can prove to be contentious and provoke strong opinions on both sides of the debate.

The draft interim planning guidance for renewable energy sets out how West Devon planners will deal with such applications and assess any impact arising.

The documents also provide information for prospective developers and householders wishing to install their own wind turbines or solar panels.

At a meeting of the council's community services committee on Tuesday, June 25, councillors voted to consult the local community about the draft guidance.

Committee chairman Cllr Robert Oxborough said: 'Wind turbines and solar farms can provoke strongly felt emotions from those wanting to conserve the countryside and those wanting to secure a "greener" future.

'This interim guidance will act as an important tool to help the council determine future applications.

'The documents will also help the council assess what the impact of a renewable energy development will be on local communities and the environment.

'I would encourage residents to take a look at the documents and tell us what they think.'

The documents are available at where people can also leave their comments.

A strategic planning officer will be available to answer questions at the Okehampton Customer Services Centre in St James' Street on July 15 and 22 from 1pm to 5pm.

Anyone wishing to make an appointment to see an officer at either the Okehampton Customer Services Centre or Kilworthy Park in Tavistock are asked to call the strategic planning team on 01822 813600.

All views need to reach the council by August 5.
