TAVISTOCK Livestock Centre reported a flying trade at the second season's sale of suckled calves last month, with an entry of 146 cattle meeting 100% clearance. Steers averaged £585.99 and heifers averaged £519.42.

Prices for steers under 12 months old topped at £815 for a ten month old Simmental x steer from FG and DM Penwill, Mary Tavy. Heifers topped at £800 for a ten month old Simmental x from the same vendor.

The Cornwall Farmers' Cup for the top price steer born on or after March 1, 2014 went to FG and DM Penwill, Mary Tavy for a group of four seven month old Simmental x reaching £755, and also gaining the Bridgman's prize for the highest priced pen of two or more cross bred steers.

Top price heifer born on or after March 1, 2014 went to Burnford Farm Partnership, Mary Tavy for two six to seven month old South Devons raising £762, winning the Sully and Co Cup and gaining the Bridgman's prize for the highest price pen of two or more pure bred heifers. Burnford Farm Partnership also gained the Westmoor Veterinary Centre cup for the top price purebred calf selling eleven heifers averaging £650.63 per head.

The Bridgman's prize for the highest price pen of two or more pure bred steers went to Burnford Farm Partnership for two seven month old South Devons raising £718 and selling 10 steers averaging £678.80. The Bridgman's prize for the highest price pen of two or more cross bred heifers went to FG and DM Penwill, Mary Tavy for three seven month old Simmental x realising £600 selling five heifers in total averaging £580 per head.

The cash prize from Tavistock Livestock Centre for the buyer of the top price suckled calf went to WH and M Tucker and Son, Brentor.

Other notable prices included £930 for a 26 month old South Devon x steer from WHR Matthews, Metherell; £800 for a 16 month old South Devon steer from Burnford Farm Partnership, Mary Tavy and £748 for a ten month Charolais x steer from MH Northmore, Horrabridge.

A smaller entry of 65 sheep saw prices in the sheep pens remaining high with 100% clearance. Top price of £60 for a pen of six store lambs went to SA and NS Mudge, Horndon.

Other notable prices include £59.50 for a pen of seven store lambs from SA and NS Mudge, Horndon, £54.50 for a pen of five store lambs from Mr C Carver, Buckland Monachorum and £53 for a pen of ten store lambs from I W Doidge, Whitchurch.

Grazing ewes topped at £53.50 for a pen of five Exmoor Horns from I W Doidge, Whitchurch.
