THE high standard of entries around Tavistock for Britain in Bloom South West has enhanced the beauty of the town. Congratulations have gone to Drake Lodge for winning Tavistock's best kept garden, and to Fat Goose Bistro on West Street for winning the best floral display by a restaurant or pub. Margaret Bennett, resident of Drake Lodge for the past 15 years, said: 'Having the garden is fantastic, all the residents use it and enjoy it all year round.' Enid Williams has been a resident for two years but prior to this was a volunteer at the Abbeyfield Tavistock Society of sheltered housing for the elderly (Drake Lodge) for 25 years, helping to weed and care for the garden. She said: 'We all get a say in what gets planted and the schemes to choose is very much communal and residents have a lot of involvement.' Volunteer Gill Leonard-Williams expressed thanks to Wendy Hicks who has provided help and advice. Fiona, Paul and Molly from the Fat Goose Restaurant said they were 'over the moon' as they pride themselves on the display. Fiona said: 'It's important we take pride in the appearance and I would like to think it draws people's attention to us.' John Goulden, Britain in Bloom judge, said he was 'very impressed' with the high standard of entries. He said: 'It's just great to see people taking pride in their gardens and displays and it makes the town look great — Tavistock is a real jewel.' Lisa Piper, manager of instigators of the Tavistock Britain in Bloom entry Tavistock BID, said: 'Thank you to all who entered and congratulations to the winners. A lot of effort has gone into these entries and across the town as a whole to embrace Britain in Bloom South West.' Tavistock entered 13 awards with the judging of the Sargent Cup, which took place on Wednesday, July 16.
