PANCAKE pandemonium broke out in Red Lion Yard on Shrove Tuesday as youngsters from Okehampton Primary School took part in the traditional pancake race. Pupils from Year 4 lined up to take part in the event with four heat winners competing in the final. The overall winner, Nathan, who crossed the line ahead of classmates Jobey, Bradley and Kate, said: ?It was good fun. It was a bit shocking. I thought I wasn?t going to win.? A television crew from Westcountry joined an audience of excited parents to film the event, braving the chilly weather in the process. Headteacher Brian Cunningham said: ?The children are here having a good time. It is days like this that children remember from their schooldays.? Mayor of Okehampton Cllr Tony Leech, who awarded prizes to the competitors, said the pancake race was ?absolutely brilliant?. He said: ?This is a tradition that we should keep up and which hopefully will continue in Red Lion Yard for years to come. It is great to see the enthusiasm of the youngsters.? The event is organised by Okehampton Town Council. After all the races had been run, the children headed back to school singing a special pancake song devised by music teacher Alison Armstrong and no doubt looking forward to tucking into some tasty treats that evening.
