A NEW unit to help older people regain their independence after a stay in hospital has been opened in Okehampton.

The £115,000 Wardhayes Reablement Unit in Simmons Way will now act as a vital staging post between hospital and a return home for up to 40 people per year.

Converted from part of the existing Wardhayes Residential Home it is designed to help up to five people at any one time re-learn essential daily living skills such as cooking and personal care.

Pictured at the opening is Devon County Councillor Coleen Herriman, Cllr Mervyn Lane, executive chairman for Social Services and Health at Devon County Council; unit manager Kay Westbrook with care assistant Trish Ware, and unit users Winifred Yeo and Ida Wonacott.
