Chagford v Stoke Gabriel

CHAGFORD made a poor start losing both Coburn and vice-captain Mortimore to overseas fast bowler Matt Smyth with only  21 on the board.

Del Lamondby and Gribble (14) put together a stand of 54 to effect a partial recovery to take the score to 75 when Gribble also fell victim to Smyth.

However, when Lamondby was out for 53 with the score at 109, three wickets were to fall for just 10 runs.

Faced by a battery of fast bowlers, skipper Jerry Christophers and Dean Topping with sensible batting mixing good defence with some big hitting rallied the innings with an unbroken eight wicket stand of 71 to take the score to 218 for 8 in their 46 overs. South African Smyth was the pick of the Stoke Gabriel attack with 5 for 47 in his 13 overs with Day taking the other 3 wickets for 40.

The figure of 218 did not look a big score on a perfect batting wicket but Lamondby struck first ball to dismiss opening bat Tolley and went on to take a further 3 quick wickets. With Wakefield chipping, Stoke Gabriel were soon 25 for 5. Spinner Gribble quickly wrapped up the innings with 5 wickets for 16 in 4.3 overs and the home side were all out for 64, leaving Chagford the winners by 134 runs to take 20 league points. Only Snell  with 12 and No 10 Sadford with 15 not out reached double figures for Stoke. Lamondby capped a fine performance to add to his 57 with the bat to finish with 4 for 22 in his 12 overs.
