FIVE teenage girls were rescued from Dartmoor last Friday after they became disorientated while camping at Sheepstor during a Duke of Edinburgh exercise. The 17-year-old girls, pupils from a school in London, called for help at around 9.30am when they became lost and were beginning to suffer from hypothermia. Staff from Tavistock, Okehampton and Ivybridge police stations were called to a rendezvous point at the scout hut near Burrator Reservoir. Members of Dartmoor Rescue Group, the police helicopter and the air ambulance were also called to aid in the search for the group. At around 11am the police helicopter found the girls near to the Red Lake China Clay Works. Two of the girls were flown to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth by the air ambulance as a precaution. The other girls went by land ambulance. A police spokesman said: 'It appears that the girls, although they had appropriate kit and maps, had become overwhelmed by the weather and general wet conditions. 'We would like to remind people using the moor that it is essential to ensure that all equipment, routes, contact details and the ability of those undertaking this type of activity is up to the challenge of what can be a very hostile and dangerous environment without the best precaution.'
