Tavistock Ladies 9

Ilfracombe Ladies 0

THE first round of the Devon Cup was played on Langsford Park with Tavistock fielding a depleted team, due to injuries and players unavailable, but their strong squad meant they still fielded 12 players, plus manager Sue Hammond who did not have to play.

Ilfracombe could only field ten and started on the back foot with Gordon and Weeks banging in the shots. For the first 20 minutes the ball hardly left the Ilfracombe half.

Gordon broke through to put Tavistock into the lead. Better communication and time on the ball paid off and when Bammons got the second the floodgates opened.

Webber replaced an already injured Gordon and Hurley and Cox kept the midfield strong. The defence of Maloney, John and Shaw under the eagle watch of sweeper Glasspoole cleared up every attack.

The visitors never gave up and one fast forward kept trying but when she did get through keeper Stock was there.

Wingers Bammons and Jones used speed and skill, and crosses were strong and accurate. Weeks got on the end of four of them and struck home each time. Tavistock went into the break 6-0 up.

The second half saw exceptional skill from John, Maloney and Jones and goals were scored by Jones (2) and one 30-yard goal from Glasspoole.

The team expressed thanks to Rachel Kelly and Allen Lewis for running the lines. Player of the match: Kirsty Jones.

TCFC ladies are away to Stoke Gabriel in the league this Sunday.
