THREE members of Tavistock Archery Club set off for the first outdoor shoot of the season held at Exeter College.

The weather played an important part in the competition with many archers unable to compete against a swirling wind, but there was some success for two of the club's archers.

Brian Smale on his first outing for many years shot a commendable score of 547 but was not placed in the freestyle competition. Terry Fry shot really well to come fourth in the freestyle with a score of 567, only missing out third place by a whisker, but was also a member of the Devon winning team which defeated Cornwall by a large amount.

In the gents' compound section there was more success, Lez James, back on the tournament circuit again after a successful year last year, took the title with a score of 624 of a possible score of 648, leaving many of Devon and Cornwall's top archers in his wake.

June 7 to 10 sees the arrival of friends from Pontivy in France, who come to do battle for the fifth year and to have a sociable weekend with many visits and events planned Tavistock look for revenge for last year's defeat in Pontivy.
