THE NATIONAL Trust?s Finch Foundry at Sticklepath will be celebrating the patron saint day of blacksmiths on November 23.

Blacksmiths from all over the country will arrive at Finch Foundry to undertake competitions and to revel in their skills.

The foundry will open specially for the day and entry will be free to all visitors, the first 100 people enjoying a free glass of mulled wine and a mince pie.

Dancing by the Cogs and Wheels Ladies? Morris Dancing team will take place in the morning and again in the afternoon and hot and cold snacks will be served in the Roundhouse Tearoom.

It is intended to ?fire the anvil? at regular intervals, a tradition to prove the anvil?s strength and guarantee the day goes with a bang.

The event will be the last for 2002 and the foundry re-opens in spring 2003.

One of the last water powered forges left in the country, Finch Foundry has been run as a museum by the National Trust since it closed in 1960.

Volunteers will be available on the day to explain the workings of the foundry and to provide an insight into the making of hand tools for mining and agriculture in the past.
