Two Yelverton firefighters have scaled the heights to raise more than £1,000 to support colleagues in need with a tough trek up and down a tough South Wales summit.
Sam Daly and colleague Steff Lamb competedPen y fan Six, a 20-mile hike with a combined total ascent of 6,200ft, in less than half their 12-hour target time.
Sam said: “Wow. We did it. We have conquered the Pen Y Fan Six Challenge in under six hours. The Welsh mountains have been kind weather-wise, bar the brutal wind and arduous elevation. We are hugely proud and so grateful for all the donations and support time to refuel and put our feet up.”
The challenge involves hiking up and down Pen y Fan, the highest point in the Breacon Beacons, three times in one day, using the six main paths as quickly as possible.
Steff is an on-call firefighter for Ivybridge and Yelverton. Her primary job is for the South Western Ambulance Service. Her friend Sam is also an on-call firefighter for Yelverton and Dartmouth, while her main job is as a firefighter at Crownhill station.
The pair, who have both previously run the Princetown Fire Station 10k in full firefighting gear, trained on the South West coastal paths and Dartmoor.
Sam said the goal was “pushing ourselves and our limits in the Welsh mountains” while helping the charity.
The Fire Fighters Charity helps fire service staff and their families in hard times.
