ASCENSION Day is being celebrated by local parish churches today (Thursday).

The day, 40 days from Easter Sunday, completes the Easter season, marking the end of Jesus's appearances after his resurrection, as he was concealed by a cloud and seen no more.

The Rev Michael Brierley, priest-in-charge of Tavistock and Gulworthy, said: 'I've known churches that celebrate Ascension Day by singing, or holding services, on top of their tower.

'We've got our own high spot — St Michael's Church, Brent Tor — so we're holding a service there at noon today, and an evening service at St Eustachius', followed by wine and nibbles.

'It's a very celebratory day, so there's nothing more appropriate than marking it in highly festive ways.'

All are warmly invited to the service at Brent Tor at noon, and the service at Tavistock parish church at 7.30 pm today.

Mr Brierley said: 'These are both very special services: come and finish off Easter in style!'
