WEST Devon schools could benefit from a £13-million bid for funding by Devon County Council.

The county has a list of 40 priority cases for repair, improvement and replacement works — and Princetown Primary School and Tavistock College appear at position eight and eleven on the list.

A dilapidated Horsa hut at Princetown serves as a kitchen/dining building and needs replacing at an estimated cost of £101,330,

Princetown School headteacher Lynne Louden said: 'Obviously, we are delighted with the news and hope that devon County Council's bid will be successful.

'The Horsa hut has been there for some 50 years, supposedly as temporary accommodation and therefore it will be terrific to have new facilities.'

At Tavistock College, fire precaution works are required in the home economics and IT departments — this carries an estimated £4,942 price-tag.

Tavistock College chair of governors Alison Fife said the areas concerned had been examined in detail by fire officers.

She said: 'There is no risk but it would be of great benefit for extra safety because of the nature of what is going on in these rooms.'

Also included as priorities are primary schools requiring replacement heating systems, new windows or re-surfacing of play areas.

These include Lydford, Bere Alston, Lamerton, Whitchurch and Tavistock.

The council's application for funding will be forwarded to the Department of Education and Employment under the £300-million New Deal for Schools programme.

A Devon County Council spokesman said: 'The bid follows extensive consultation with the county's schools.

'In addition to consulting directly with schools on individual schemes, the county council also involved headteachers in the task of finalising the bid itself.'
