Yelverton seconds v Chudleigh seconds

YELVERTON Seconds made it three wins in a row with a comfortable seven wicket victory over visitors Chudleigh Seconds at a sunny Langton Park on Saturday.

Home skipper Dave Scott won the toss and asked Chudleigh to bat first.  Opening bowlers Tony Carter and Chris Pearson got into their stride hitting a nagging line and length and Carter picked up his first 'home' wicket of the season thanks to a sharp catch in the gully by Gerry Keen with the score on 17.  This initial breakthrough seemed to open the floodgates for Carter as he bowled his 13 over spell unchanged up the hill taking the next four wickets, Tuckett (9), Argyle (0) and Fisher (0) bowled and Horne (0) lbw and at one point was on a hat-trick, ending up with the fine figures of 13-8-26-5 to leave Chudleigh on 31-5.

Pearson (13-9-18-1) chipped in with a single wicket of Howard (12) to leave Chudleigh on 31-6 with Carter and Pearson bowling 12 consecutive maidens between them.

Youngster M Heather and veteran M Trout dug in and put on 29 for the seventh wicket, before Jerry Warland spun one past Heather's solid defence and bowled him for 14 with the score on 60.  Matt Tamsett (4-0-12-1) struck with the score on 75 bowling Vittals for two and then Warland (6-1-16-2) picked up his second wicket bowling Shaw for a duck to leave the score on 78-9.  The last wicket pair of Trout and Williams put on 22 as the Chudleigh innings closed on 100-9 off their 46 overs.  Trout was left unbeaten on 40.

In reply Yelverton lost opener Andy Taylor for one, lbw to Shaw with the score on five.

Matt Tamsett joined remaining opener Pete Garland but he fell for a duck to leave the score 8-2.  Gerry Keen and Garland got their heads down with Garland playing the anchor role and the pair put on 37 for the third wicket.  Keen was bowled for 18 by Fisher with the score on 45, but once Warland joined the unbeaten Garland at the wicket the fourth wicket pair knocked off the remaining runs with an unbroken partnership of 59.  Garland was unbeaten on 38 and Warland on 36 as Yelverton reached 104-4 off 28.4 overs with Warland hitting the winning boundary.

With Tavistock Seconds beating second placed Alphington Seconds and Yelverton picking up 18 points, this moved the Bohemians up into joint second spot in the table on 185 points.  Tavistock head the table on 201 points.
