IT was third time lucky for the ladies of Okehampton Golf Club. On Wednesday they went to Hele Park to play in the finals day of the Devon League. It was a tough draw in the morning, meeting last years winners Portmore in the semi final, but Okehampton ladies fought hard and though Rachel Spry, first out lost, Lin Hazelton, Lin Atkinson, Kath Mansell then won, which meant the team needed one more win from the remaining matches - though Kay King and Trish Vick lost, Jane Warren managed to win. This meant a 4-3 victory to take the team to the final. This was against Wrangaton and it was a shaky start against this strong team, with Rachel, Lin and Lyn losing. It meant Wrangaton only needed one more match, but Jane had a wonderful match and beat her opponent 6-5, and Kath had another good 3-2 win. This made everyone excited and the players tense. Also, Kay, team captain, had made a couple of changes to the afternoon line up, bringing in Mary Keir who had a tight match but managed to win on the 18th. This left Chris Stevens and her Wrangaton opposition to decide which team would carry off the League Salver, and Chris won 2-1 on the 17th. This was just as well as the spectators, supporters and team members were getting somewhat over excited. It was a wonderful finish to the season for this small ladies? section, getting to the final day in all three competitions, finishing third in the President?s Trophy, second in the Creasy and now winning the league.
