IT was first time lucky for a local pony competing at last week's Devon County Show.

The chestnut filly — Langage Spring Flower — owned by Mr and Mrs D McCarthy and Georgina Stephens, of Lumburn, Tavistock, won the pony breeding class for a filly or gelding two or three years old, under judge Mrs R de Quincey from Sussex.

Meg McCarthy said the filly had been bred by Wendy Harvey, of Langage Farm, and they bought her a year ago after searching countrywide for a suitable pony. 'It was her first show and her first win,' Mrs McCarthy said.

Another local success came for shire horse owner Diana James from Brentor, whose seven-year-old bay shire horse Heathfield Redwing followed up her win at Honiton Show by taking first place in the brood mare class at Devon County. Redwing also won the best Devon-bred class. Her four-month-old bay foal took the honours in the heavy horse foal class.

Diana James said the show season had been short and late but had started and ended on a high note.
