WREN Music will present a solo concert by Phil Beer as the latest part of its 'Folk Comes to Town' series on Saturday, September 15.
Phil Beer is perhaps best known as a top-class fiddler, but his skills don't stop there — he also plays slide, Spanish and tenor guitar, mandocello, viola, mandolin, South American cuatro, and provides his own vocals.
He started to play fiddle, guitar and mandolin while still at school in Teignmouth, and played his first gig aged 14. His impressive track record includes touring with Mike Oldfield, being a member of the feted Albion Band from 1984 to 1991, and playing on the Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels album. His duo with Steve Knightley, 'Show of Hands', was voted best live act by the public at the 2004 Folk Awards and has gone on to sell out the Royal Albert Hall four times.
The concert is a charity fundraiser for the Baring-Gould Folk Weekend, held in Okehampton each year, and of which Phil is the honorary patron. The 2012 festival will be held over the weekend of Friday, October 26 to Sunday, October 28.
The concert will be held in Fairplace Church from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Tickets cost £10 for adults, £5 for under 18s, or £25 for a family of up to two adults and three children. Advance booking is available online at http://www.wrenmusic.co.uk">www.wrenmusic.co.uk or by post to Wren Music, 1 St James Street, Okehampton, EX20 1DW.
