FIVE days of festivities on land and water will mark the centenary of Calstock Viaduct next week. From August 8 to 12 villagers can revel in their rail link to the wider world with fireworks, fascinating photographs and films and walks and talks giving an insight into railway life in past times. The engineering wonder was finally finished in August 1907, two years behind schedule and over budget. The viaduct carried the first truck of spoil on August 8, 100 years ago. A canoe view of the viaduct will start the celebrations on Wednesday and on land Calstock Footpath Society will lead a guided walk along the route of the old incline railway which connected the mines and quarries of Kelly Bray, Kit Hill and Gunnislake to the bustling river quay at Calstock. Afternoon teas will be served in the village hall and on the patio every afternoon and centenary merchandise, including a limited edition bone china mug, will be available. The story of the viaduct will be told on the evening of August 9 when John Newcombe will talk about its construction, and John Snell, who worked on the railway for 46 years, will talk about the Devon Great Consols, the East Cornwall Mineral Railway and the building of the branch line. An exhibition by Calstock Parish Archive Trust will run from August 10 to 12 and an evening of archive footage with a compilation of highlights of Calstock life from the last century will be screened in the village hall on August 10. The weekend starts in fine style with an Edwardian boat trip and picnic, taking in the ancient relics of the valley?s industrial past up to Morwellham and beyond and back via Cotehele. The wearing of boaters, bustles, blouses and blazers will be encouraged to add period flavour. Calstock Rowing Club will continue the river theme on Sunday when they invite people to ?have a row? in their new gig boat Zeus and the festivities will conclude with a sail past finale involving vessels of all kinds passing under the viaduct. Programmes and tickets are available from the post office and the village hall.
