BUILDING on last year?s successful Bere Apple Fest, organisers hope this year?s event will be even bigger and better.

The event will be held at Bere Ferrers Church Hall from 2-5pm on Saturday, October 16. There will be local apples for sale, most of which will be chemical-free, and toffee apples supplied by the WI.

A modern fruit press will demonstrate cider-making, and visitors can bring their apples along to be crushed and take home the juice in their own container.

An advice centre for apple growers or potential apple growers will be manned by personnel from Devon Orchard Link and Charles Staniland will give pruning demonstrations in an adjacent orchard using trees over 50 years old.

Richard Vulliamy of Tamar Volunteers will demonstrate grafting and Endsleigh Nurseries of Milton Abbot will have a large tree selection for sale with advice on how to treat the young trees.

A member of the Bramley apple family, Celia Stephens, will have a display on the famous apple with advice on how to grow it.

The event is sponsored by the Tamar Valley Service, which will have a display stand with photos and maps of old orchards of the Tamar Valley.

The Silvanus Trust and Tamar Volunteers will also be present at the event, to which entry is free.
