THE scent of pine filled St Eustachius' Church this week as Tavistock's first Christmas Tree Festival was held.

Friends of St Eustachius organised the festival, which involved 46 themed Christmas trees decorated by local businesses, schools and clubs.

As well as the trees, a variety of events took place during the week-long event, including a 'Light-up a Life' service, carol singing and a concert from Kelly Choral Society.

John Rea, chairman of the Friends of St Eustachius, said: 'A great deal of work has gone into organising the event.

'We are hoping to raise money for the Friends of St Eustachius' to go towards the beautification of the church. Renovating the ceiling will be the next job.'

Mr Rea also said they are hoping to modify the back of the church to incorporate a tea and coffee area when concerts are held.

Town mayor Mandy Govier opened the festival by inviting a child from St Rumon's School to cut the ribbon before switching on the lights.

Cllr Govier said: 'Im absolutely thrilled to see the display. The thought that has gone into everybody's tree is amazing. They are so beautiful to look at.'

The Rev Michael Brierley said: 'This is such an amazing and spectacular occasion. It's really special to me, the number of community trees involved in this.'

The opening was followed by the pupils from St Rumon's School singing two songs from their Nativity.
