THE Tavistock Sings! Music Festival is as much about singing the praises of Tavistock as it is about music ? so says festival director Simon Ible.

The new event ? featuring international and national soloists as well as performers from all over Devon ? is being promoted by Tavistock Forward.

Held over the May Bank Holiday weekend, it has already attracted support from West Devon Borough Council and Tavistock Town Council plus organisations including Tavistock Rotary Club and Tavistock Business Association.

The priority of this funding is to promote and encourage regional development and visibility.

?With this groundswell of support plus donations from private individuals we have raised almost sufficient support for the project. The fundraising target now requires just a final £1,000,? said Mr Ible.

?If there is anyone out there and they feel they should like to support this exciting enterprise please get in touch soon,? he said.

John Taylor, chairman of Tavistock Forward, said this organisation was supporting the event as part of the Tavistock Market Town Initiative funded by the South West Regional Development Agency.

?This festival is about creating partnerships within the community,? he said.

He said this involved the district and town councils, local businesses and private sponsors, music lovers and musicians.

The aim was to present Tavistock as a ?wonderful festival venue, and a very special place to live, to work and to visit?.

?Simon Ible, the artistic director, is doing an excellent job and we are hoping that this will be the first of many annual events that will increase the profile of Tavistock on the cultural map,? said Mr Taylor.

World famous opera singer Sarah Walker has agreed to be honorary president of Tavistock Sings!

The festival takes place over the Bank Holiday Weekend of May 3, 4 and 5 in Tavistock Town Hall and St Eustachius Church.

Soloists are being recruited both nationally and internationally. Festival performers come from all over Devon as members of the Ten Tors Orchestra, the Two Moors Festival Chorus, St Eustachius Church Choir and the South West Early Music Forum.
