THE BIG race of the day was not at Newmarket, Lingfield or Newbury last weekend ? it was at Bere Alston Bowls Club where crowds gathered for the first ever ?Ferret Race Classic?. Following the annual ladies versus men championship, the race meeting attracted more than 50 people, raising cash for a new bowls club in the village, which was granted planning permission last week and for which a development target of £250,000 has been set. The race was such a success that the club hopes to make it an annual event.
