Heather Fell, Olympic modern pentathlete silver medalist, writes about her life 'on and off' the track.
IT was straight back into training after Hungary even though I didn't know what I was training for. Just as well I didn't hang around as I've only just discovered that this time next week I'll be competing in China. It's back to Cheng Du the city that hosted last year's world championships. Luckily for this competition we won't be spending two weeks in the grey city, instead we'll just have to cope with the jet lag. This week I've spent more time on the road than I have in Devon or Bath. I managed to coincide my first trip home with speaking at the South West sport and exercise medicine conference in conjunction with Derriford Hospital. It would be such a boost to our area if we could provide the expertise and resources that places such as Bath can offer; so it was very encouraging to see the beginnings of such developments.
It was then back up and on past Bath the next day for the British Athletes Commission Conference held at Bisham Abbey. Friday night I made it home for less than 12 hours before heading to Exeter to run in the county track and field championships. To make it worth my while I entered the 1500m and the 5K and used them as good training. Saturday night was no rest for the legs as lots of reeling was required at a friend's birthday ceilidh in Bath. However this must have all helped warm me up for the 3K back in Exeter the next day; I managed to run a surprisingly strong race.
