THE great British breakfast will this month be celebrated in Okehampton with a feast of local food. The event will be held on Tuesday, January 25, with breakfast being served from 8am at the Plume of Feathers. The purpose of the event is to highlight the quality of local food and it will be hosted on behalf of the Home Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA). Local organiser Derek Godfrey-Brown said a fitting description for Devon was ?the food basket of England? as so much quality food is produced in the county. ?We should shout it from the rooftops, as well as ensuring that wherever possible we enjoy our outstanding dairy products produced on the lush pastures and eat the meat coming from our famous cattle herds,? he said. Therese Coleman, nutritionist at HGCA, said, ?Most people don?t realise that there is a vast choice of regionally produced breakfast foods available in this country. ?It is very important to make time for a healthy breakfast as it helps to sustain energy levels throughout the day. ?For example wholegrains, found in breakfast foods such as muesli, porridge, unsweetened cereal and bread, are a good source of energy as well as providing minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and dietary fibre.? Recipe ideas for breakfast can be found at http://www.hgca.com/breakfast/recipes/">www.hgca.com/breakfast/recipes/ They include the ultimate bacon sandwich, figgy breakfast loaf and carrot and cranberry muffins. Anyone not wishing to consume the traditional full breakfast on January 25 can have a word with the Plume of Feathers landlord, Nigel, who will do his best to accommodate their wishes.
