FORTY keen history students from Tavistock College have recently returned from an action-packed fact finding visit to Normandy in France.
The year 9 students, accompanied by four history teachers, spent four days in Caen, visiting sites that took them back almost 1,000 years.
They toured the Abbaye aux Hommes, where the remains of William the Conqueror are buried, Caen Castle, the D-Day landing beaches, Falaise Castle, Bayeux Cathedral and the famous Bayeux Tapestry itself.
Teacher Andrea Gilbert said: 'All the students learned a tremendous amount at each site and one of the most memorable, and moving, was the American war cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach, where almost 11,000 American world war two soldiers are buried.'
The trip was rounded off by a bowling trip, disco and very popular visit to an artisan chocolatier!
Miss Gilbert said: 'From the students' reaction to the trip and their reviews of it, it is clear how much they gained from it, on many levels.
'A fantastic time was had by all and the students were an absolute pleasure to be with — they were a credit to Tavistock College.'
