THIRTY-four years after it was formed Okehampton Churchwomen's Group held its final dinner recently.
The group which has provided many social activities for female supporters of Okehampton Parish Church has had to close because of a lack of members.
Joyce Ewens, who has been with the group since the start, said it was sad because over the years members had experienced 'many happy times'.
'We have gone from 30 members to 17 and we just don't have the money to keep it going,' she said.
Regular speakers, social evenings, summer outings and even pantomimes were all part of the club, but Mrs Ewens said it was increasingly difficult to get new members and people prepared to take on the roles of secretary, treasurer and so on.
'All the members are over 50 and the large majority are over 60,' she said. 'We tried to get the Sunday School parents to get involved but nobody wanted to do it.'
The group has raised money for the church through raffles, and fundraising events have also helped outside charities like the Devon Air Ambulance.
The remainder of its funds will be split between the Neil Cousins Memorial Fund and the Church refurbishment fund.
