THE Crossways Inn in Folly Gate is to host an auction of promises this weekend, to support those with Down Syndrome.

The pub will host the auction this Saturday, March 23 to raise funds for Exeter and East Devon Down Syndrome Support Group and the Down Syndrome Association.

As well as bidding on promises offered up by others, including window cleaning, car washing and babysitting, lots include family days out to Castle Drogo, World of Countrylife, the Eden Project and Becky Falls. Sports fans can also win tickets to see Exeter City, Plymouth Argyle and Torquay United play at their home grounds. Brave souls will also be having their legs waxed on the night to raise money.

Hayley Wilkins, committee member from Exeter and East Devon Down Syndrome Support Group and one of the auction organisers said: 'Having a brother with Down Syndrome, this charity is very close to my heart. It was not until three days after he was born that a diagnosis was confirmed.

'Clearly this was a big shock particularly for our parents, who had to come to terms with understanding his condition and what this meant for our family's future. During the coming months we experienced a period of distress, anxiety, guilt and found it very difficult adapting to this new way of life.

'Having a child with additional needs means we have a high level of input from professionals and ongoing appointments to attend.

'All of this is very overwhelming. It wasn't until we heard about the local support services and groups that were available that we began to accept our situation, allowing us to positively interact with other families that were going through the same thing and learn to take each day as it comes.'

Hayley said the support given to the family meant they could acknowledge her brother's achievements rather than focusing on the difficulties he could face.

She said: 'At times it feels the journey has been very long, but reflecting back we are so proud of everything he has accomplished. He remains an inspiration to us all and reminds us each day of what life is all about.'

This is the first big fundraising event the family has organised for the local and national charities and in doing so, they hope to raise awareness of the many talents and skills children and adults with Down Syndrome possess, and their ability to positively participate within the community.

'We look forward to hopefully seeing as many people as possible at the event and raising lots of money to support a fantastic cause,' said Hayley.

The event starts at the Crossways at 7.30pm.
