North Tawton 28 South Molton Seconds 16 NORTH Tawton introduced some changes for this non-league match. It was good to see the return of Neville Phillips at number 8 and Richard Lethbridge at flanker while James Henshaw took up the second row position beside captain Andy Pyle. David Fewings moved back to scrum half with Paul Fewings at fly half, making it a father -son pairing at half-back for North Tawton. South Molton had the chance to gain points as well with a penalty kick. It went wide and North Tawton took advantage of the let-off to make ground. Their attack faltered when a long clearance by South Molton pushed them back. Tom Davis was again the man to sort out the problem as he caught and ran the ball back into the opposition. This set up the chance for Tawton to drive on and a break off by Neville Phillips from the number 8 position got the ball out to Dave Quick on the right wing. He broke through he tackles on the touchline to score a good opening try which was converted by Paul Fewings. South Molton came back and North Tawton repeatedly failed to give the full ten metres on penalty taps, and were marched back towards their posts. Soon South Molton were in range of the try line and a further penalty was taken quickly by captain Gordy Warren. A gap opened in the Tawton defence and he ran through to score, converted by Andrew Burnett. Paul Fewings slotted a penalty for Tawton but Burnett converted two for South Molton, leaving the half-time score at 10 -13 to the visitors. North Tawton set up a maul close to the South Molton try line. Scrum half David Fewings broke round the side and forced his way over for an early try. The conversion drifted wide. Again, the long downfield restart was used and good following up by Tom Davis from full back forced an error in the Molton defence to give Paul Fewings another penalty from about 15 metres out. This he converted and pushed his side into an 18-13 lead. South Molton pulled the score back to 18-16 with another Burnett penalty, but play was going Tawton's way. Their pack was doing well behind the young front row of Tom Phillips, Adam Davis and Keith Knott, with flanker Richard Lethbridge jumping well in the lineouts and involved in all the loose play and Neville Phillips setting up good drives off the back. Finally the pressure paid off. A quick tap penalty by David Fewings caught the opposition off guard but they rallied in time to force the ensuing maul across the try line, from the bottom of which Fewings emerged with the try. This was converted by Paul Fewings. In the final stages another penalty was given away by Molton within range for Paul Fewings to round off the match with a successful kick and give his side the victory at 28-16. Twenty three of those points came from the Fewings family pairing, but the match had been a good team performance for North Tawton. Men of the match: Tom Davis and Richard Lethbridge.
