IT'S BEEN two years since Devon Social Services withdrew its funding from the Okehampton Family Centre but with local support it has managed to keep going, providing a drop-in centre, toy library and craft workshops for 85 families in the town.

Recent donations have been received from the Okehampton Ladies' Inner Wheel (£100), Belstone Ladies' Club (£148) and Okehampton Town Council (£240) and added to this a large donation of £7,000 from the Lloyds TSB Foundation has secured the family centre for at least another year.

The centre support group has an agreement with NCH Action for Children to rent rooms at Tenby House and from there it runs a toy library and drop-in centre on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am to noon and 1pm to 4pm and craft workshops.

However, the group still needs more funding and is holding two social events to raise money, the first of which is a fun quiz tomorrow (Friday) at South Zeal Victory Hall.

The event is open to teams of four, with an entrance fee of £6 per team and there will be prizes for the winning teams and a raffle.

The second event is a barn dance at the same venue on May 24 featuring Walter Shortage and the Hosepipe Banned.
