THE Falklands War will be the topic at the termly Stoddard Lecture held at Kelly College this Friday (October 6). The speakers will be Captain M C Clapp and Major General Julian Thompson giving a perspective on the war. In 1982, Captain Clapp was in command of the amphibious task group made up of Royal Naval, Royal Fleet Auxiliary and Merchant Naval Ships. He was responsible for the execution of the landings, defence of the landing area and subsequent logistic sea support of both 3 Commando Brigade and 5 Brigade as they moved towards the capital, Stanley. Major General Thompson was the brigadier in command of 3 Commando Brigade and led the initial landing force onto the Falklands Islands to establish a base from which to liberate the islands when 5 Brigade joined. They will talk about the islands and the politics leading up to the conflict and about their roles in these events. The lecture will be held in the college library at 7.30pm. Members of the public are welcome to attend and there is no admission charge.
