The Tavistock Fairtrade Group is delighted that following the site survey by Devon County Council highways, it has been confirmed that new signs advertising Tavistock as ‘A Fairtrade Town’ will be installed below four of the ‘Welcome to Tavistock’ signs.
The group selected the four main routes into the town, namely the A386 from Plymouth
County councillor for Tavistock Debo Sellis is part of the Fairtrade group and is delighted with the progress being made.
‘Having renewed our Fairtrade town status with the Fairtrade Foundation, it is great that we are able to promote our town as a place where ethical consumers have access to a wide range of goods that are fairly traded,’ she said.
Local resident, Mike Dennis, another member of the Tavistock Fairtrade Group commented on the wide range of items available, ‘I think local residents will be surprised at the number of shops and cafes that already supply Fairtrade items, everything from bananas and coffee, to clothing and crafts are available — you just need to know where to look. Hopefully our Fairtrade leaflets will help people find what they are looking for, the leaflets will be available from the library and the Visitor Information Centre, not to mention the relevant shops and cafes.’
The Tavistock Fairtrade Group will have a display in Tavistock Library from Monday, February 24 to Sunday, March 8, during Fairtrade Fortnight. As reported last week a full colour leaflet has also been produced in association with Tavistock BID and pancakes will be served using Fairtrade products on Shrove Tuesday (February 25) at the United Reformed Church (Lower Deck Cafe) from noon until 1.30pm.
In addition, on March 6, there will be a Fairtrade Breakfast event, with two cocoa producers from Ghana to speak briefly about the impact of Fairtrade on their lives. Breakfast will be served from 9am until 11pm.
Events will raise money for the Fairtrade signs.
