A NUMBER of ideas from the public to enhance Fairplace Gardens in Okehampton have been submitted to West Devon Borough Council.

The authority confirmed this week that all these suggestions would be taken on board and three different concepts would be drawn up by architect Steve Whettem.

Deputy chief executive of the borough council David Inman said seven or eight representations had come in.

'The architect will look at what has been submitted and I would envisage some concepts coming forward for consultation later in the year,' he said.

People were asked to put forward their designs following the resignation of artist Ray Smith, who had been employed by the borough council on the town's enhancement programme. The artist made the decision following criticism from townspeople over his work.

Okehampton Chamber of Trade has given its support to local resident and architect Nils Westman's idea to create a large square at Fairplace incorporating the gardens and other buildings and features with a focal point and roundabout in the middle.

Mr Westman has suggested using bollards around the perimeter to preventing traffic mixing with pedestrians and mature trees to add landscape detail. He has also put forward the idea of creating a new Tourist Information Centre at Fairplace Gardens incorporating the toilets.

He told the chamber recently that he believed the authorities were focusing too much on individual areas rather than looking at Fairplace as a whole and a tourist information centre would draw people towards that part of town.
