TEN members of a West Devon group concerned with fair trade issues travelled to Westminster recently to lobby the government about their campaign.

Representatives from West Devon and Torridge Trade Justice Group joined West Devon and Torridge MP John Burnett and spent an hour discussing fair trade issues with Clare Short, Secretary of State for International Development.

Topics covered during the meeting included the work of the World Trade Organisation, GATS agreements and food subsidies.

Rebecca Wagstaff, a 14-year-old student at Okehampton College, asked how young people in schools and colleges could be made more aware of the message of fair trade in Third World countries.

Members of the group said Miss Short listened carefully and answered every question put to her. They said they were very appreciative of the time spent with the minister and were encouraged to continue with their campaign.

The group was formed in September, following an inaugural meeting at Hatherleigh.
