A GRANT application of more than £500,000 to improve Callington's historic features and public places has been made by Callington Town Council. The council has applied to the National Lottery Townscape Heritage Initiative and if successful, the money will not only improve public areas of the town but also assist the private sector. Private property owners who need to make renovations to their buildings or enhance the historical characteristics of the older buildings can obtain 50% grants through this scheme. Callington portreeve Andrew Long said the total value of this application could be close to £1 million. He said like most applications it was a long process but if the town council was successful after a second stage application, activity on the ground would start early in 2009. 'It is a case of nothing ventured, nothing gained — so we have to try,' he said. Councillors have also commissioned a traffic survey to see what changes can be made, after the recent town plan revealed people wanted to see Callington tidied up and made more attractive.
