AN OUTSIDE toilet block at the Old School Community Centre in Stoke Climsland is proving a real inconvenience to the trustees of the building.

The trustees want to knock down the loos in the former playground as they say they have become 'an eyesore'.

But they have been told by conservation experts that the building has to stay — even though the actual loos have been removed.

The toilet block dates back to the 1850s and although it is not listed it is considered to be too important to demolish.

An appeal is now going out to the public to find an alternative use for the structure.

Chairman of the old school committee David Short said: 'We really wanted to knock it down because it is unsightly.

'It has had several additions over the years and it's an eyesore which is going to carry on being one unless we can find an alternative use for it.

'Because it is away from the main building it is not really a practical place for a storage building.

'It could just end up withering way which gives conservation a bit of a bad name.'

Mr Short said the committee did not want to spend its limited money on boarding up the toilets which would not look very attractive anyway. Anyone who has a bright idea should contact the old school on 01579 370493.

A North Cornwall District Council spokesman said: 'The Stoke Climsland Community Project received a grant a number of years ago from the Heritage Lottery Fund to acquire the building.

As part of the conditions of this grant, although the building is not listed, consultation with the NCDC conservation officer must take place before any work is carried out, given it is an important heritage building at the heart of the Stoke Climsland Conservation Area.'

'The district council has not been directly approached by any members of the Stoke Climsland Community Project regarding specific proposals or work to the building, but suggest they contact us if they have any issues they would like to discuss,' said the spokesman.
