FURTHER to your article 'Arts centre upset by letting of building' (August 28) and Ann Pulsford's subsequent letter on September 11, I totally agree with Ms Pulsford in that The Wharf should be given every opportunity to take over the building in Canal Road.
I have been a volunteer at The Wharf for over six years and am very aware that the extra space that 5 Canal Road would make a huge difference to the events that could take place at our wonderful theatre. For instance, when there are more than 20 people involved in a production, the performers have to use the cafe and offices as dressing rooms - and then walk through the audience in the foyer to get to the stage! How unprofesssional is that?
Also, I would be interested to know what Nick Payne from the West Devon Borough Council is referring to when he says, 'there are a number of measures the council provides to assist The Wharf in continuing to exist'. Apart from free rates, I am not aware of any other subsidy that The Wharf currently gets from the council.
Several years ago I believe there was a restriction on 5 Canal Road in that it could only be used for community use. Has this changed, and if so, when?
