EXPLORER scouts from across Mid Devon returned to their roots recently for an action packed weekend on Brownsea Island, the birth place of the scouting movement in 1907. The Devon group joined up with fellow Explorer Scouts from Poole in Dorset and had great fun playing games, making new friends and eating pizza. The following morning, they sailed and kayaked over to Brownsea Island and camped on the original camp site used by Baden Powell for his experimental camp. The youngsters said it was a fantastic feeling knowing they were standing on the place where scouting actually started almost 100 years ago. During the weekend, the youngsters sailed and canoed, played games in the dark, explored the island and saw lots of red squirrels. Two Explorers, Aoife Quigly and Oliver Charlton were both invested while on Brownsea Island and another Explorer Kate Charlton was awarded her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. District Explorer Scout commissioner Paul Charlton, who was awarded his medal of merit by George Davey said: ?For scouts from anywhere in the world, where could be better to be invested or receive an award than the very place where scouting started?? Mid Devon Explorer Scouts are for both girls and boys aged 14 to 18 from right across Mid Devon. To find out more contact Paul Charlton on 01837 52211.
