FIREFIGHTERS from Chagford and Okehampton attended a fire on the A30 near Whiddon Down on Sunday which destroyed a recently restored Volkswagen camper.
The mixture of a fuel leak and electrical problems is believed to have caused the fire at around 2pm but a couple and a child managed to escape from the blaze without injury.
Chagford firefighter Iain Rice said the fire also caused damage to a tree and most of a lay-by where the camper vehicle was situated.
Gas cylinders on board exploded making things 'lively' for a while, said Mr Rice.
The fireman is calling for people to give a better description of accident locations after fire engines were sent up and down the A30 from the Cornish border to Honiton looking for the incident.
'If they can give a description in terms of landmarks, roundabouts, bridges or junction or say whether they are close to Dartmoor or Exmouth it would help,' he said.
'We would appreciate it if people could use roadside emergency phones because we can then pinpoint the location. Mobile phones will not connect you direct to local operators like emergency roadside phones do so it can be harder to define the location.'
