YELVERTON Bohemian Spitfires (U9s) and Mini-Spitfires (U7s)were presented with medals by club president Brian Chetwynd at their final training session of the season — the youngsters were amazed when Brian told them that he first played cricket at the ground in 1949!
Yelverton have a thriving Colts membership with more than 50 boy and girl members in the U9 age groups alone and also teams at U11, U13 and U15.
The U7 age group is run by level II coach Glyn Potter and concentrates on basic cricketing skills and the ABCs of Agility, Balance, Co-ordination and Speed.
When the children progress to the U9 age group, run by Level II coach Paul Farnham, they start to learn more advanced skills based around Kwik Cricket and more than 20 of the children passed their Silver Kwik Cricket award where they were assessed for overarm bowling, overarm throwing, the straight drive and the high catch.
Some of the youngsters will get a chance to show off their skills at a Kwik Cricket Festival taking part at Yelverton tomorrow (Friday) from 6pm to 8pm when teams from Yelverton, Kelly College, Cornwood and Tavistock will take part.
